2006-07 Season News

The Northstars regular season was their worst in many years finishing with a record of 15-22-0-3 and 33 points. The team finally came together at the end of the season winning our last seven regular season games. The Stars finished in 8th place, managing to secure the final playoff spot.

Knowing that they had an uphill battle facing the 33-6-1-0 Winnipeg Saints who finished with 67 points - more than twice the points than that of the Stars. The Northstars took on this challenge with voracity. The Stars earned a split in Winnipeg to return home for three games. The game two win was the Saints first loss at home all season. Norway House dropped game 3, but came back to win games 4 and 5. The Stars returned to Winnipeg with a 3-2 series lead and the momentum. Injuries proved to be the Northstars downfall. They lost two games and the series in Winnipeg.

2003-04 Season News

The Northstars are coming off of their most successful season in team history. In the 2003-04 season the Stars amassed an impressive regular season record of 28 wins 3 losses and 1 tie to capture the NJHL regular season pennant with 57 points. The Stars then went on to the NJHL playoffs and swept the Cross Lake Islanders 3 games to 0 in the best of 5 semifinal series. In the league finals the Northstars faced the NCN Flames. The Stars made quick work of the Flames disposing of them in 4 straight games earning them their 3rd NJHL Championship in the last 5 seasons.

The Stars entered the Provincial Final Five tournament in Thompson with one goal, to bring home the gold. The Northstars began the tournament with a victory over North Winnipeg Satelites. The Stars then faced the MJBHL Champion and defending Provincial Champion Selkirk Fishermen. The Stars won this game to boost their record to 2-0 for the tournament.

Entering Saturday, the North Stars only needed 1 victory to guarantee them a birth in the gold medal game on Sunday. The Stars faced the Tataskweyak Juniors in the morning game and managed to get a victory. The victory secured the Stars spot in the gold medal game against the North Winnipeg Satelites who also earned themselves a birth in the Sunday game later in the day Saturday by knocking off the Selkirk Fishermen. On Sunday, the Stars went into the game with gold on their minds. The game was very exciting and close going into the third period with Stars leading 2-1. The North Stars jumped out to a 4-1 lead with two goals in just over a minute to start the third. The Stars went on to a 6-2 victory to claim their first Provincial Championship.

After enjoying the victory for a few days, the Stars got right back to work in preparation for their trip to the Western Canadian Championships in Schreiber , Ontario . The tournament began with the Stars dropping their first game to the Regina Capitals. Later in the day the Stars got their first victory by beating the host team the Aguasabon Rats. The Stars upped their record the next day to 2 and 1 by defeating the Thunder Bay Hawks, handing them their first loss of the season. The Stars entered Saturday needing at least a tie to get to the medals. They faced a very strong Richmond Sockeye team early Saturday morning and were defeated 2-0. The Northstars then needed at least a tie against the Red Deer Vipers to advance to the medals but could not hang on to the 4-4 third period tie.

With just over three minutes left in the third, the puck was shot out of the corner by a Red Deer forward and deflected off a skate into the net to make the score 5-4 for the Vipers. The Stars pulled goalie David Herman in favour of an extra attacker but could not find the back of the Viper net, losing the game 5-4 putting an end to their great season.
