According to the Cree Nation population statistics of January 31, 2009, the Cree Nation has an on-Reserve population of 5,134 and an off-Reserve population of 1,593 for a total of 6,724 Band Members. There are individuals of non-aboriginal origin, as well as a number of Metis and others, residing off reserve bringing the total population of Norway House to approximately 6,000 people. The majority of the population is Treaty Status.
The residents live in two primary districts: Fort Island and Rossville, these are the original settlements of Norway House where the majority of the residents live.
Community Services
On-Reserve facilities include a Health Building, Chief & Council and Administration Building, Construction and Maintenance Garage, two Housing Warehouses, York Boat Inn, Kenosew Sipi First Nation Multiplex, Kistapinanihk Mall, Nikanihk Aschakosak Daycare Centre, Kinosao Sipi Minisowin, Fire and Ambulance Halls, playgrounds, and ball fields. The Kenosew Sipi First Nation Multiplex houses an arena, four curling sheets, York Boat Diner, Veteran’s Hall, fitness centre, confectionery, Radio and TV Station, VLT Lounge, and offices for Parks & Recreation, Gaming Commission, Probation Office, Band Policing Program, and Hockey Development.
The Kistapinanihk Mall is a new major business and service complex that houses a Northern Superstore, Royal Bank, Norway House Pharmacy, Canada Post, Shawna’s, Teecka’s Boutique, Quickstop Food Court, Cree Nation Designs Handicrafts and a Clothing Store Outlet.
There are facilities for Fire and Police (RCMP) Protection, Hydro service (from Grand Rapids), Postal Services (daily), Health Care (variety of services), and Child and Family Services. There is an infrastructure in place including Water Supply, Sewage and Garbage Disposal, and Roads. Transportation is available through Nelson River ferry shuttles in summer and ice roads in winter, an airport and airstrip for chartered and scheduled airlines, and docking facilities for boats and float planes. The Norway House Cree Nation completed over 40 kilometres of paved roads the summer of 1998 that have greatly enhanced the overall appearance of the community.
